HOLIDAY FROM A TO Z

The offer concerning babysitting has diversified: An option to consider if you cannot take your dog with you.

From Food to Zoo noses, you will find all the tips and tricks so that your pet dog spends the best summer possible, with or without you.

Because, the period of the holidays is also a privileged moment to share with him.

Altitude

In general, the altitude is contraindicated for very old animals or heart failure animals. If you cannot avoid bringing your dog or dogs, it will take out gradually and avoid efforts, at least initially. A veterinary visit before the departure on vacation will avoid many worries on the spot.

Food in summer

Do not vary the nature of his dog’s food in the summer; even if he takes the food he is used to eating in his luggage! Any changes can lead to digestive disorders. It is therefore better to anticipate and make sure to find the right food on the spot, or bring the food of the animal to the place of vacation. In case of significant physical activity, only the quantity can be increased. The dog easily supports changing food intake schedules. Cats and new pets will instead make multiple small meals a day, with no specific schedule.

Boat

Most animals naturally know how to swim, but drowning occurs when the dog cannot get out of the water and runs out. If you bring your dog on a boat, it is safer to put on a lifejacket, just like you do with a child. There are today vests adapted to the size of your animal. Be careful also to certain breeds of dogs whose physique does not allow them to swim, such as the English bulldog or the pug.

Brushing

Brushing, not washing is necessary after each hike. In addition, we must remove plant debris that clings to the hair, as well as spikelet that can be placed between the fingers or in the ears. Brushing is also a good opportunity to eliminate ticks that the dog may have caught despite the means of prevention used. Finally, one will inspect carefully the pads, looking for cracks or wounds to treat. To protect them during hiking (before, during and after the ride), apply a tanning spray on the pads 8 days before departure, then during the hike. These products are available in a veterinary clinic.

Swim

Whatever the hair, it is advisable to rinse the dog after a bath of salt water because drying; salt may irritate the skin and cause dermatoses such as pod dermatitis (inflammation between the fingers) and “hot spots “(skin infections with staphylococci).

It is therefore strongly recommended, if you want to get your dog to take a sea bath, and then rinse it with fresh water making sure to remove the sand between the fingers, and then dry it, insisting on the ears to avoid ear infections.

Heat

The high temperatures that usually prevail on the beaches can be at the origin of a heat stroke in your dog, think well to give him to drink regularly and to always make him a small place under the parasol. Also suggest to your dog to regularly take a bath of sea. It will refresh it. Be careful, brush your companion with sunscreen is useless because in two seconds it will have licked everything…

Dermato

After inspecting the legs of your dog for plant debris stuck in the skin, we will take care to bathe the wounds with Dakin solution diluted half with water to properly disinfect. We can renew the care morning and evening for 2-3 days.

If there are pesticides on your dog’s feet, you should immediately wash the legs with a dog shampoo, then rinse thoroughly.

Care should be taken to inspect the oral cavity for signs of pesticide and mucosal irritation. A walk in the countryside in rainy weather does not require bathing your dog on your return: you can dry your companion with a towel and then brush it so that it regains the radiance of its coat, especially if it- it has long hair. The protective sebum produced at the base of the hair is quickly reconstituted.

Water

Dogs love to swim! This refreshes them in hot weather. Just like for humans, sea bathing allows the animal to exchange through the epidermis minerals and trace elements. The quality of the skin is improved, and the cardiovascular system is stimulated. In addition, by its important hydrostatic power, the sea facilitates joint movements, and contributes to muscle toning. The sea bath therefore helps the rehabilitation of animals that have recently undergone bone or joint surgery, or simply to old animals and osteoarthritis. By cons, sea baths are not recommended for animals with skin problems.

Sea water

The absorption of algae or a large amount of seawater can cause significant vomiting and diarrhea. It should be watched and not let your dog drink or swallow anything. If vomiting or diarrhea persists for more than 12 hours, a veterinarian should be consulted.

Backwater

The main danger is leptospirosis that the dog can catch while drinking stagnant water. It is a serious bacterial disease that affects the liver and kidneys. Your dog is protected by his annual vaccine against this disease. Nevertheless, in case of significant risk (hunting dogs, dogs permanently living in the countryside …), a reminder every 6 months is necessary.

Tar

To remove tar from an animal’s hair or legs, first cut the hair to the maximum. Then, do not use solvents or other chemicals that would be irritating to him. We prefer soap or sunscreen to soften the tar, and then we use warm water and a shampoo for dogs and cats to remove it. It will finally rinse abundantly. If there is too much tar on the skin, or if the dog has ingested it, it will rather consult the veterinarian. He will do more intensive care, sometimes under tranquilization, and prescribe medication if necessary.

Hydration

You should always make sure that your best friend has a bowl full of fresh water.

Identification

In case of loss of your dog or cat, the tattoo, or better, the microchip, is enough to find the master (provided that the coordinates indicated by it are still relevant). But we can gain in speed, if a small medal with a phone number and attached to the collar or the harness. The collar or harness is recommended even if the dog is tattooed or chipped.

Legal

In case of loss of your dog or cat, the tattoo, or better, the microchip, is enough to find the master (provided that the coordinates indicated by it are still relevant). But we can gain in speed, if a small medal with a phone number and attached to the collar or the harness. The collar or harness is recommended even if the dog is tattooed or chipped.

Leash

Whether on the beach, all day or at certain times, your dog must be on a leash out of respect for other guests. If you break the rules, you are liable to a variable fine depending on the municipality. If accepted on the beach, dogs may be prohibited in the bath area. It is therefore essential, before booking for your holiday, to call the town hall or the tourist office of the chosen place, for information. The law states that all dogs traveling on public roads or in public green spaces must be kept on a leash.

The owner also has the obligation to pick up the droppings. There are canine excrement bags in supermarkets, or specialized stores.

Jellyfish

The jellyfish are among the dangers that your dog may encounter on the beach. Envenomation can occur in the water, but also on the shore when for example your dog plays with a failed jellyfish. So avoid letting your dog play with anything on the beach. The symptoms are easily visible; a local edematous reaction, which can be serious in cases of oral or pharyngeal involvement because of the risk of respiratory problems.

These reactions are painful and are accompanied by redness of the skin. More rarely, generalized reactions that result in giant urticaria and angioedema, which can progress to cardio-vascular collapse and death, can be seen. Sometimes, the dog may also have violent hyperthermia with loco motor disorders.

What if my dog was stung by a jellyfish?

The therapy will depend on the affected area. Indeed, if your dog has been stung by the jellyfish in the tongue or eyes, it will be necessary to consult an emergency veterinarian after delicately rinsing the area with sea water. In other cases it will be necessary:

If possible, keep the area punctured in sea water for about ten minutes without rubbing or scraping to allow the nematocysts (venomous cells) to come off. You can also wash with seawater, without rubbing. Clean afterwards with very hot water (if possible seawater) because all the toxins are more or less heat-sensitive.

If there are still tentacles, consult a veterinarian as soon as possible. We can also apply vinegar whose role will be to inactivate the tentacle nematocysts and then try to remove them by protecting themselves with a glove.

The poisoned area can finally be scraped gently with a dry cloth, or sand to extract the last nematocysts. If your dog still seems to be in pain, consult your vet if there is any doubt. Rinsing with fresh water is to be avoided because the osmolarity difference causes the bursting of the venomous cells.

Pests

The chiggers are tiny larvae of red mites (Trombicula automnalis), which bite the animals at the end of the summer. They are located mainly in interdigital spaces and on the lobe of the ears (in the mumps) where they cause a significant itching. The armyworms pine is larvae of butterflies known to travel in single file. They can spray stinging and allergenic hairs, making them especially dangerous. The danger is especially important for pets: a dog stung by mosquitoes with tongue (which he may have used to lick the itch on his body), if not treated quickly with high doses of cortisone, risk necrosis of the tongue.

Therefore prevented from feeding, he must be euthanized. The most important thing is to consult a veterinarian as soon as possible. Have the reflex to rinse the tongue and the oral cavity with water and not to rub especially, which could then break stinging hairs and release more toxins, thus aggravating the prognosis.

Outdoor

For any hiking, it will first of all prepare the pads of your dog, so that they resist the different terrains encountered, wear and warm-ups. There are products to apply one week before departure, then during the hike.

It will be necessary to provide a food ration of 20% higher than the usual ration, except to want to lose weight his animal.

Even if the dog is not always on a leash, you must have one with you, especially if you meet other walkers, or other animals.

Lost

A simple bell at your dog’s collar can help locate it if it is in a nearby area. Otherwise, legally, any animal must be identified by tattoo or microchip, which allows finding the master in case of loss. Remember to check on the identification card, before departure, that your details (address and phone number – mobile -) are well updated. Finally, there are now ways to find his animal through geo-location by means of a collar-GPS and a subscription system. Talk to your veterinarian, he will advise you.

Toxic plants

He is mainly at risk of vomiting, which can sometimes be violent, or more rarely diarrhea. There are, however, more toxic plants than others such as yew, belladonna, foxglove … Find the complete list of dangerous plants for your pet on the site

Beach

In order to prepare your stay at the beach, it is essential to check if your companion is authorized to access it … The access to the beaches for the dogs is regulated by a municipal decree. The mayor alone is authorized to authorize or prohibit dogs. This is why there are no rules common to all the ranges. Dogs may be allowed only during certain seasons or at certain times. Generally seaside resorts or very tourist sites refuse dogs in summer. It must be kept on a leash, for the sake of other holidaymakers. You risk a fine in case of infringement. Also know that if they are allowed on the beach, swimming is often forbidden…

Wound

Know that seawater does not act as a disinfectant. It prevents even the good healing of wounds. After bathing, it is therefore necessary to apply an antiseptic systematically on the wounds of his dog.

Wasp stings

In case of sting, the affected area will blush, edematize, and will be painful. If your pet has access to the area, his first instinct will be to lick himself. In some cases, your dog will start to swell, especially on the face. We are talking about Quincke’s edema. In mild cases, simply remove the dardet to apply a soothing cream. If there is edema, it is a veterinary emergency.

Pollution

Even if it is not proven that the dog can be affected, it is logical to think of it because of its size at the level of the mufflers! In addition, teachers often report that the eyes of their animals are more “dirty” in town (conjunctivitis), and that their dog coughs more (laryngitis, tracheitis …). In case of peak pollution, it seems reasonable to reduce the walks with your dog to a minimum, and perform them either early in the morning or late at night.

Snake

If your dog has been bitten by a snake, first try to calm the dog and keep yourself calm. We can apply a little ice on the wound, but the best is to bring his animal to a veterinarian, if possible by avoiding walking to limit the spread of venom.

Sea salt

Sea salt has no pest control action in cats and dogs. We are not exempt from treating her animal against fleas and worms when we spend our holidays at the beach.

Transport network

Attention, all dogs are not allowed in public transport (RER, metro, bus, tram and funicular …). Only allowed are: Small animals (less than 6 kg) if they are enclosed in bags or baskets (the largest dimension of these bags or baskets must be less than 0.45 meters). The transport is then free (except SNCF where the ticket is single fare).

They must neither dirty nor inconvenience travelers. Finally, larger dogs are still allowed in the RER and the train if they are leashed and muzzled.

You will then have to use for your dog a 2nd class ticket, 50% reduced fare corresponding to the route to be made. An exception is service dogs. A small animal will be easily transported in two wheels, but we will take care to enclose it in a bag, to avoid falls. There are all kinds of transport bags, to fix on the bike or the bike, or to keep on the back.

Use

A farmer forbids me to walk in a path with my dog on the pretext that we are in a game reserve, is this normal? The rural code prohibits the straying of domestic animals, that is, to leave an animal unattended, out of earshot or out of sight of its owner. As a result, if the dog is on a non-private path, and close to his master (even on a leash), he can move freely.

Vaccine

It is absolutely necessary that the dog, even city-dweller, be well vaccinated because it is permanently contaminated on our sidewalks, or with other dogs in the street. Similarly, in case of bite, the first thing that will show is the identification (tattoo or microchip) of the animal and the good vaccination against rabies. It must be remembered that France is no longer officially a country free from rabies, because there have been several dogs and cats contaminated in recent months!

Car

Even for a short time, even if the windows are open, especially in summer, it is very strongly advised against leaving your dog in his car, as this could put his health at risk. In case of suspected heat stroke, it is urgent to put his animal under cold water, to lower its internal temperature. If the symptoms are more important, do not hesitate to consult urgently. Heat stroke can kill your pet quickly!

Zoo noses

In addition to traditional flea protection, you must protect your dog against ticks. The treatment can be carried out by spraying, spot-on, or even ant parasitic collar. It will even be possible, on veterinary advice, to combine two ant parasitic agents with different modes of action. Before you go on vacation, you must absolutely vaccinate your pet against two serious diseases that are piroplasmosis, and Lyme disease. This vaccine requires two injections at one-month intervals in the first year and then an annual reminder.
